Coyote Cries

Under the orange moon
their voices drift
shrill
distant
wild
Downhill the dogs waken
in envy and anger
Deep bays
send the message
one by one
over darkened homes
and empty meadows
across the valley and up
where the horses
scream alerts of danger
and cats scratch and thunder
    to the rooftops
On the opposing hill
our pup moans
low in her throat
a sound of warning
and impatience
that shoots down the road
echoing for minutes
and miles
“The Hunt
The Hunt”
and the moon turns pale
